  • Must Have Herbal Remedies From the Grocery Store & Garden

Herbal Remedies You Should Find in the Grocery Store or Your Garden

    Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies are plants that have a medicinal effect. Herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years. In fact, some evidence suggests that plants were used for medicinal purposes over 60,000 years ago. The earliest written evidence dates back to over 5,000 years ago.

“ A man may esteem himself happy when that which is his food is also his medicine” ~ Henry David Thoreau

Such herbal remedies have been making a real comeback in recent years.

Orange peel the bitterness makes a nice digestive aid. Here is a great recipe for Candied Orange Peel from Joybilee Farm. She also has a great recipe for Candied Ginger. I love candied ginger for my digestive issues. A little bit goes a long way.

Herbal remedies contain powerful chemicals that many pharmaceutical companies and scientists are studying. Many of these plants are either available in the grocery store or can be grown quite easily in a garden. Using these plants in your diet can have a significant effect on your health and overall wellbeing.

These herbal remedies can often be just as effective as pharmaceuticals in the prevention and treatment of disease:

    1. Ginseng. Ginseng is one of the most popular plants in Chinese medicine. The most popular varieties are American ginseng and Asian ginseng. American ginseng is considered to have a greater relaxing effect, while the Asian variety is more stimulating.
    • Consider these benefits: Ginseng is an excellent antioxidant and reduces inflammation. Ginseng has shown promise for improving brain function and treating erectile dysfunction. It could also lower blood sugar, lower fatigue, and have benefits against cancer.
    1. Garlic. Garlic is readily available and a powerful herbal remedy. Most people enjoy the taste of garlic, bad breath notwithstanding.
    • Garlic has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Hypertension responds positively to garlic consumption. In fact, garlic is at least as effective in treating hypertension as some medications.
    • Garlic also lowers cholesterol levels, may help prevent Alzheimer’s, and could help with the process of removing heavy metals from the body.
    1. Turmeric. Turmeric is used in Ayurvedic medicine and is also a popular spice in Indian food. Turmeric is also readily available in any grocery store. The primary active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin.
    • Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It is as effective as aspirin and ibuprofen in treating inflammation. It is also believed to be beneficial in treating and preventing cancer. Depression, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s are also believed to be helped by the consumption of turmeric.
    1. Ginger. Another very common grocery store item, ginger, is excellent for the treatment of nausea and morning sickness. Ginger can be used as a spice or made into tea. More benefits include:
    • You can use it to help treat muscle pain and soreness.
    • Ginger is another excellent anti-inflammatory.
    • Indigestion, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol can all be reduced by ginger.

    1. Valerian root. This might be a little harder to find. In fact, you’ll probably have to grow this one on your own, but it’s worth the effort. This flowering plant has many health benefits.
    • Headaches, insomnia, digestive issues, muscle pain, fatigue, and anxiety can all be helped by valerian root.
    1. Chamomile. This daisy-like flower is most commonly consumed in tea form. Chamomile is believed to treat insomnia, reduce cold symptoms, boost immunity, and lower stress levels. Chamomile tea is available at your grocery store.

Herbal remedies can’t replace all pharmaceutical drugs, but they are viable replacements in many situations. Of course, you should still include your doctor in your herbal remedy plans.

Pomegranite~ So many more uses other than pomegranite juice. Today I am drinking a herbal tea that has pomegranite, Vanilla, Cherry and Rose hips. Pomegranite is good for you in so many ways.

Herbal remedies can be very effective and inexpensive. $1 of garlic can easily last a week. If your budget is tight, herbal remedies can be a great way to boost your health without breaking the bank.

Even if you’re in 100% perfect health, herbal remedies can help to keep you healthy. You have nothing to lose. In fact, your food might taste even more delicious while you’re making your body healthier.

  • June Linkup with A Chronic Voice: The Mystery Continues

June Linkup with A Chronic Voice: The Mystery Continues

Repeating, Wondering, Turning, Getting, Desiring:June Linkup with A Chronic Voice

These prompts all jump out at me as feelings around my current struggle with my health. I have been in the E.R. twice in the last 5 days. I was told I was a “medical mystery”.  The first E.R. visit they said I was likely struggling with an inflammation flare. The second one after a tick had been found and removed at home and I was running a fever they said it could possibly be a tick borne illness and likely Lyme but that the tests were not showing anything.

    Here We Go Again

So here we go again. I was determined this was the year I would take control of my health and get back on track. It seems it is always 2 steps forward and another 3 back. I know its not but it sure feels like it.  Struggling with my mental health by not letting the depression win along with my physical health battles.

    Determined to Solve The Mystery

So I repeat my history and symptoms over and over and the solution to my health is still an unsolved puzzle.  I am wondering if I jinxed myself by setting the goal to get healthier this  year. Though I am always wondering about something. I love to explore and learn new stuff. My mind never seems to shut off though I’d love for it to.  I am turning to more natural methods of health remedies and hoping they will give me more help then the doctors rx’s have. It is very true that I am getting very frustrated in desiring to be healthier, happier and more productive.

I had events on my calendar that my health has decided to stomp down on my excitement and make me feel bad for not being up to par to participate the way I had wanted to.  I am so tired but I refuse to give up turning over stones and repeating myself until I find the answers and get the level of health I want.

Believe you can and you will

    Insect Annoyance Prevention

Insect annoyance prevention tips and tricks. It’s that time of year when we want to spend time outdoors. Some days the insects drive us back indoors. With the rise in numbers of Lyme diagnoses we are trying to prevent ourselves and our pets from contracting it from one of those little nasty ticks.

Previously I had written this blog post about avoiding the summer nuisances of Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitoes. I went on a search and found an abundance of articles about Insect annoyance prevention tips and tricks.

    Doing Our Homework

For you I rounded up a few more good articles that I thought helpful.  I have created a FREE recipe eBook  with a few more resources that I am offering free to all of my readers. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy this freebie. I hope you find some recipes that you like. Keep reading to find the link to the eBook download further down the post.

When planning what to do for Insect Annoyance Prevention Tips & Tricks I believe it is important that  we educate ourselves and find healthy alternatives to strong chemicals. There is so much information available. It is important to also make sure you are using a trusted source.Always  and check with your medical provider or vet. Insect Annoyance Prevention Tips & Tricks

3 Tips taken from my article 15 Tips To Minimize Summer Insect Annoyance

1  Plants Find wild Tansy plants and plant in and around your yard. Ticks, fleas, gnats, and etc can’t stand the smell. rosemary tyme and basil and catnip

2 if you use bug spray use organic bug spray. You don’t want to be using chemicals that could potentially harm your health. I buy straight up citronella essential oil and make my own safe bug spray.  Other times I buy spray that is made at our local apothecary. I am shopping local and supporting small family business with those purchases.

3 check around your property for standing water. You don’t want to encourage the mosquitoes to make your home their breeding grounds.

I found another great article about repelling ticks and fleas with plants. It is this one. • Can You Name 5 Five Things You Like About Yourself ?

Five Things You Like About Yourself

Reading a post over at Nyxies Nook about Self Care and Recovery She asked readers to name 5 things they like about themselves.  That same week Ruth Soukup had challenged her readers to  name one thing they like about themself.

My reply is ” This one is going to be hard for me. I am feeling challenged to think about and write down 5 things. ”

    The List

Here is a list I had started called my best habits. I will use this for my  five things I like about me.

I had written this after doing a list of bad habits. These were done using question prompts form Facebooks make a list feature.

As I wrote the list of negatives I found myself getting more depressed and negative about myself. I enjoyed the best habits list much more. Try making your own list of five things you like most about yourself. What did you write down?

    Self Love

From what I am reading lately a lot of women (and men) struggle with self love and self care.  Can you name 5 things you like or love about you? Answer in the comments if you are struggling with this. Or even if you know 5 things shout it out in the comments.

    Quick May recap

5/31/2019 Today is Friday the last day of May. This month flew by and this week was short due to the long weekend. I feel like I really need things to slow down for just a bit. There was a lot going on in May. Here is a post I did at the beginning of the month with all of my plans for challenges I was giving myself or doing with others. I am feeling guilty for being behind on my plans. I try my best to take things day by day to not get overwhelmed.

    This weeks recap:

This week I came across Farm Fresh Tuesday blog hop. I was so thrilled to find all of these great homesteading blogs. When I started out it was with the desire to blog about my experience homesteading but so far it has been more about my journey with mental health and chronic illness. It inspired me to figure out how I can balance things out so I am writing about homesteading as well as my awareness posts for chronic illness and mental health.

    Link Ups

I believe I actually stumbled upon the Farm Fresh Tuesday link up by visiting blogs over at the Dish It & Dig It link up party. While there I shared my Dandy Dandelion post and a book review post over there. I usually also join up  the Literacy Musings Monday

Linkups at Maryanderingscreatively.com. This week there was no linkup. Mary is the first blogger who visited and commented on my blog when I was brand new. The support of community from other bloggers is like having another big extended family. I have met a lot of very nice people in the blog groups and chronic illness support groups on Facebook. Even though I am far from a social butterfly community is important to me.

    What else happened this week?

Todays 5 minute Friday writing prompt is “Name”. If You missed it last weeks was “Culture”. I will be writing and posting my five minute free write on name within the next few days. I did do an earlier blog post about names and the meaning behind the names I have used in the online and blog world.

    Update:

Time flew, life got crazy and I did not get last weeks 5 minute Friday written. How many of you reading this feel like there is not enough of you going around? Feeling like you are juggling too many balls? I just started taking a course on Stress. I really need to make myself prioritize what is most important and focus on those balls instead of trying to juggle everything and dropping the important balls.
